Reducing Randomness

Hi everyone!

It is a tendency of humans to attribute some of the events in their life to pure chance. A wide range of sayings has even built up around a belief in randomness, such as “What were the chance of that happening?” and “I was born lucky”. But what if randomness only -appears- to be random? If the mind knows the factors that affect chance then it may be able to automatically develop processing steps to alter chance. Whether the mind affects chance positively or negatively probably depends though on whether the person believes themselves to be lucky, as the mind will usually default to the programming that it is most often exposed to.

An example of this may be soul-mates, two random numbers in the Universe who 'lock on' to each other's number and are drawn together. The closer the pair of numbers get to each other, the more that randomness decreases until finally they meet. Other popular applications that could arise from taking the randomness out of random include lotteries, card draws, weather manipulation and the prediction of particle positions (useful for transporter technology, Trek fans!)

What set me on the path of exploring this subject was, as has happened frequently, a flash of inspiration provided by fiction. In this case, it was a part of the final episode of the original version of the card-dueling Japanese anime 'Yu-Gi-Oh', in which one of the main characters (Atem the Pharaoh) knows precisely what card he will be drawing next, because his will is dictating it. There is not a YouTube clip to illustrate it, but you can read a transcript of this part.

Whilst I was at university, the psychology department ran a public experiment where they placed a machine in the library lobby that asked you to press a button to select whether a head or tails coin toss would be generated, the aim being to test whether there was evidence of people having pre-cognitive psychic ability. Rather than rely on chance or use precognition, I took an alternative approach.

I visualized a tails toss being represented by a binary '0' number and heads by a '1' and then before pressing the 'guess button', I would fix an image of a '0' or '1' in my mind depending on what I wanted the outcome of the toss to be and believed that the machine's selection should be influenced by my will.

The psychologists had stated in the machine's instructions that a normal rate of successful prediction should be 1 in 4 attempts (even though with only two possible outcomes available, it should be 1 in 2 under perfect conditions – but humans aren't perfect!) Using this visualization technique, I lowered the odds to an average of 1 in 2. I shared my findings with the psychology department by email. I didn't get a reply!

If chance could be expressed as a measurable scientific force then that would suggest that exerting an influence on 'force carrier' particles like bosons could alter events in your favor. This concept is represented visually by the Marvel comic book mutant character Longshot, who emits a field from his body that affects chance. Incan shamen also believe that blueprints in a person's spiritual energy field exert an influence on how events external to the body unfold. If this sounds unlikely, remember that different people and different medias can often represent the same universal insight in varying forms.

Once one understands how the mind can affect chance then it becomes possible to begin considering how those processes could be converted into random-variable tracking software that performs the same functions. Anything at all can be turned into binary numbers, as math is a universal language. Microsoft's Kinect motion-tracking technology already has some capability to extrapolate the positions of objects that its cameras cannot see within its visual range. Because of the size that objects scanned by Kinect's sensors need to be in order to be registered though, it obviously cannot see particles.

But since computer-controlled detectors that can display particle movement tracks on a screen already exist in particle research machinery such as the Large Hadron Collider, perhaps consumer tracking hardware like Kinect could be adapted to project these particles as non see-through holographic people in motion (rendering a cloud of colliding particles as a crowd of colliding humans!) so that the software could make predictions in real-time about their upcoming positions. A name for something that takes the randomness out of random numbers could be an 'actuator', because one is turning the numbers into what they actually are instead of what they might be.

As exciting as all this sounds, however, there are also equal arguments in favour of randomness in some applications, because it is through random, unexpected occurrences that evolution occurs and new possibilities come to light. Without an element of chaos, humanity would stand still and stagnate (not to mention that life would be terribly dull if every variable was predictable and controllable). Sometimes, there is a lot to be said for letting Lady Luck be in the driving seat!

Going through my image archive, I found a picture I made during prototyping for my old 'Having Faith in Virtuality' article from September 2010. It's of an old WoW character of mine with a section of biblical phrases about the wearing of armor and weapons applied to it. Having said that, the 'pants of truth' might have been a modernization of the original Greek translation! It's amazing the things you find in your digital drawers.

I promised to bring you the bug out-take from the production of the 'Secret of Healey Nab' digital visual novel in which co-main character Larch's little sister Willow does a Super Mario head-stomp on her brother! I'm curious: are any teachers or teaching authorities implementing the US 'National Education Technology Plan 2010' ten-year plan or are folk waiting to see what happens politically after the 2012 election?

I was watching a GTA IV 'aerial city tour' YouTube video (as I sometimes do for inspiration about business ideas involving city life) and it occurred to me that I could be looking at real aerial city tours instead and using them for business planning. Indeed, my theory was confirmed: you can find a fly-by of most major cities just by searching YouTube for ' aerial tour'.

During the coming week we will be launching a new Sam website for kids aged 8-12 called Sam's Big Life. The site will initially take the form of a Fleet-written blog covering advice for self-empowerment and capability increasing, written in a child-appropriate style. It will be completely safe for kids, as there will be no personal-detail registration, chat or forums / commenting (moderation technology may be added in 2013 once we are sure we can provide such features completely safely). Check out the logo!

We've made another round of accessibility enhancements to the Sam site, this time to help people with weaker eyesight. The account registration page has much larger form headings and double-size text in the information input box.

The text-size increase has also been applied to the search box. We have added the enlarged search box to the new 'Sam's Big Life' site for 8-12 year olds too. You can see the updates in this image.

It is said that a teacher's greatest joy is to be surpassed by their students. But teachers should put off this point for as long as possible by continuously improving themselves to stay at the top. This also benefits the student, as it gives them a new higher achievement bar to reach for. A clip from the old anime cartoon show 'Dragon Ball' of Young Goku versus Jackie Chun, aka Master Roshi, illustrates this principle...

Like most creative folk, I was influenced by the media that I experienced whilst growing up. As regular readers of my writings will know, the beginnings of my work in developing potential maximization techniques were inspired by the Japanese animated series 'Dragon Ball' (see above). The main character Goku's signature special move in that series was an energy beam fired from two hands held close together that was called the 'Kamehameha Wave' (presumably after the Hawaiian ruler King Kamehameha).

Over the years, I figured out the mechanics of the Kamehameha (thanks to my engineering degree, funnily) ... and then I was reminded of an age old life lesson about mastering the fundamentals of a subject first. Because I found I could only harness enough potential to warm my palms up nicely. Still, I keep trying and achieving a bit more. I might release enough potential to heat a hot dog one day!

While browsing through my image research archive this week, I came across a picture of an old videogame console utility cartridge called the Action Replay.

These, and cartridges like them, had a button that you could push to freeze a game and then either use the cartridge's ASIC hardware to generate a cheat mode by altering the code or input a pre-made cheat from a magazine or code-book (the early cartridges were released in the years before the World Wide Web became available).

This made me think about how such rule-breaking could be applied to real life instead of virtual life. Sam has written extensively – for example, in the article 'I'mPhone: Taking Hardware Out of the Equation' and the Ideas Archive entry 'Student Director' - about how one can use mental and physical choreography to take control of the world around them at will as though they had pressed an activation button.

We are all hard-wired from birth with the algorithms to overcome the limitations of the rules of reality that are instilled into us by adults as children at any time that we choose to, so long as we believe completely that the Universe is not as rigid in its operation as we are typically led to believe by human society.

Once we recognize that our mind can be a living cheat button then we can press it at any time to change our perceptions of our environment. This is similar to a technology called 'phasing' that is now used in massively multiplayer online games such as 'World of Warcraft' and 'Guild Wars 2', where the world adapts to your individual actions and provides you with features that are invisible to others who are not on the same phase as you (for instance, player-tailored store vendor avatars in a city).

And whilst the changes that we make will, for the most part, only be visible to ourselves unless you take an action that alters the environment in a way that is tangible to observers – such as the air-disturbance side-effects from a release of dormant inner potential, as described in the article 'Measuring Potential'.

Once you become capable at taking control of the world then you can help others to do the same and so gradually turn a small ripple of influence into a global movement, as detailed in last week's newsletter editorial. Because some rules are meant to be broken!

Takni Miklos has joined the Sambiglyon Volunteer Program to fill an important gap in our Second Life services - object scripting classes!

If you are already an Android app developer then you might find Google's emulator for Google TV useful so that you can test whether your content will work on Google TV-equipped television sets.

I jot my ideas and to-do notes down on a piece of paper folded in half for ease of carrying about, and once I've filled the first side I start on the other side. When side two is done though, there's always a little mental conflict that on the one hand says "Fresh paper is niiiice! Start a new sheeeet!" and the other mental voice that says "You have two blank sides left. Waste is baaaad!" Most of the time I go for the latter option, but always look forward to when I can start a new sheet!

We're planning on using Atari ST / Commodore Amiga style box packaging as the inspiration for promotional box-images for our mobile apps. Here's the first shot of our design for the planned but not confirmed Android version of the 'Secret of Healey Nab' digital story-book, put together on a Second Life film set in a similar way to how the artwork for the 'GTA IV' packaging was painted in super-size on the wall of an empty warehouse and then photographed:

The Ren'Py visual novel creation engine works best with a video format called Theora. Miro is an excellent free converter, to which you can give an optional donation of $5 if you feel it has helped you. It sure helped Sam, so we gave!
